Brazil Santos Bunker Detective Survey Successfully Completed Through Comprehensive Voyage Performance Analysis

Brazil Santos: Advanced Bunker Detective Survey Through Voyage Performance Verification
At Santos Port, Brazil, the Vals Marine Survey team successfully completed a comprehensive Bunker Detective Survey following the identification of an approximate 23 metric tons bunker discrepancy requiring detailed technical verification.
Rather than relying solely on conventional bunker quantity measurements, our survey team conducted an extensive operational and voyage performance analysis to determine whether the observed bunker balance could be technically justified.
The investigation included a complete assessment of the vessel’s voyage history, with particular attention given to:
Voyage performance analysis
Daily speed and fuel consumption verification
Guaranteed speed and consumption figures provided by the Owners
Weather routing records
Beaufort scale evaluation throughout the voyage
Wave height and sea state analysis
Vessel routing and navigational deviations
Engine operational performance
Noon reports and engine logbook verification
Remaining On Board (ROB) calculations
Technical bunker reconciliation
Following an intensive onboard survey supported by documentary analysis, our surveyors successfully completed the investigation by evaluating all relevant bunker detective parameters as a single integrated process.
Although the final findings did not reveal an extraordinary discrepancy beyond expectations, the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of combining multiple Bunker Detective Survey methodologies into one comprehensive verification process. The successful completion of every analytical stage provided confidence that the bunker balance had been examined using internationally accepted technical principles and operational evidence.
Modern bunker investigations require far more than simple tank soundings. Accurate verification demands a multidisciplinary approach that combines engineering knowledge, voyage performance analysis, meteorological assessment, operational records, and fuel consumption modelling. Every parameter contributes to building a complete picture of the vessel’s actual bunker performance.
For the Vals Marine Survey team, this assignment represents another successful operation within our growing portfolio across Brazil and South America. We remain committed to protecting the commercial interests of shipowners, charterers, operators, and P&I correspondents by delivering technically robust, transparent, and evidence-based bunker investigations.
Each completed operation further strengthens our experience in the field of Bunker Detective Survey, reinforcing our commitment to continuous technical excellence and operational integrity throughout the global maritime industry.
